Douglas D. Amman

Director Emeritus of Choral Activities

Professor Emeritus, Choral Conducting

 

Douglas Amman, Professor Emeritus, Ball State University School of Music, served as Director of Choral Activities from 1982-2004. During his tenure the choral ensembles toured in 36 states, Canada, and Europe. They also performed for three regional ACDA conventions. Dr. Amman now conducts three ensembles-Planet Earth Singers (college-community choir performing primarily multicultural music); East Central Indiana Chamber Orchestra (college-community orchestra performing many styles of classical and lighter works); and College Ave United Methodist Chancel Choir (which has toured in Europe and portions of the United States). He continues an active role in ACDA, serving as Indiana's Youth and Student Activities R & S chair. In addition, Dr. Amman is also sought after as an adjudicator for festivals and competitions.

 

Students of Dr. Amman teach in public schools throughout Indiana and beyond. Many of his conducting students have gone on to college positions of their own, spreading his passion for the Choral Art.

Don P. Ester

Conductor, University Choral Union

Professor and Area Coordinator, Music Education

Don Ester, professor and area coordinator of music education, joined the Ball State University School of Music faculty in the fall of 1992. A 1980 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, he holds a Master of Music degree from Southern Methodist University, where he studied choral conducting with Lloyd Pfautsch, and a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Dr. Ester has taught in the public schools and has served as a full-time church musician. His present responsibilities at Ball State include serving as chair of the music education area, teaching choral music education courses, and conducting University Choral Union. A frequent guest conductor, his research interests include music literacy pedagogy, the adolescent voice, and instructional strategies. He is currently the Immediate Past National Chair of the Society for Music Teacher Education.

Jeremy D. Flock

Jeremy D Flock is honored to be continuing his music career at Ball State University, where he is working on his Masters of Music in Choral Conducting.  His undergraduate work was completed at Indiana University of PA in Vocal Performance.  While there, he studied voice with Ms. Joan Luchsinger and Dr. John Dietz.  After college, while working and living in Pittsburgh PA,  Jeremy performed with Pittsburgh Opera Chorus and the Pittsburgh Savoyards.  He also could be found playing the organ and directing the church choir on Sunday mornings at Whitaker United Methodist Church and later at St. Andrews Lutheran Church.  While at BSU, he will be studying conducting with Mr. Richard D Mathey and organ with Dr. Kirby Koriath.

Katie Kellogg

Katie Kellogg is in her third year at Ball State University where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Music and is currently working towards the Doctor of Arts Degree in Vocal Performance. In addition to primary voice studies with Dr. Mei Zhong, Katie is also pursuing music education and music history as secondary emphases. Prior to attending BSU, she spent her undergraduate years at Alma College in Alma, MI, where she earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Elementary Education and Music. At Alma, she studied voice with Ms. Victoria Walker and sang with the Alma College Choir under the direction of Dr. Will Nichols. Katie spent a year teaching elementary music in her hometown of Cadillac, MI before coming to BSU to pursue graduate studies. In addition to her duties in the Choral Department, Katie also holds a half assistantship in both the Music Theory and Music Education departments.

Michael C. Lister

Michael C. Lister is currently a Graduate Assistant at Ball State University where he is completing his Doctor of Arts degree in Choral Conducting and has served as Instructor of Music Theory and Undergraduate Conducting, Director of the Statesmen Male Chorus, and Assistant Conductor of the Chamber Choir, and is currently the Assistant Conductor of the University Choral Union and Concert Choir. With a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from Mount Vernon Nazarene University and a Master of Music in Music Theory from Indiana University, Mr. Lister continued conducting studies with Dr. Samuel Gordon at Akron University and Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe at the University of Miami. In Fall 2008, Mr. Lister joined that Conducting Faculty at Butler University as Director of the Madrigal Singers, and has recently begun his second year as Conducting Fellow of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir.

Throughout his career, Mr. Lister has remained an active musician and educator, with expertise in several fields. He was Staff Accompanist at the University of Miami in the vocal and musical theater departments and played for several concerts, recitals, and other performances. He served on the piano faculty of Otterbein College in Columbus, Ohio and was the musical director and accompanist for the Akron Lyric Opera from 2003-2005. For six years, Mr. Lister was the Director of Choirs at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, a private junior high and high school where he developed a program including four choral ensembles of various ability levels and incorporating a wide variety of musical styles. Mr. Lister has also served as director of worship at several churches, most recently at High Street United Methodist Church in Muncie, IN. He is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association, College Music Society, and Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses. He currently resides in Muncie, Indiana.

Shelbie L. Wahl

Shelbie Wahl is currently in her third year of the doctoral choral conducting program at Ball State University. During her previous two years at BSU, Wahl studied conducting with Dr. Jeff Pappas, Dr. Robert Kvam, and R.D. Mathey. She studied voice with Kari York, and continues with Dr. Craig Priebe. She also was the recipient of the Don Neuen Choral Conducting Assistantship. This will be her third year as conductor of the Women's Chorus. She was previously the Assistant Conductor of the Concert Choir, and is currently the Assistant Conductor of the Chamber Choir. She also teaches undergraduate conducting, coordinates the BSU Choral Invitational, and is responsible for the technology needs of the Choral Department.

 

Wahl attended DePauw University in Greencastle, IN where she received her BMA degree in instrumental music (trumpet/piano) and theatre direction/production. She also holds an MM degree in choral conducting from Butler University. While at Butler, Wahl held the Graduate Assistantship for Opera Workshop and was Assistant Conductor for the University Choir. She has previously studied conducting with Henry Leck, Dr. Eric Stark, Stanley DeRusha and Orcenith Smith; voice with Nancy Davis Booth and Mary Ann Scott; trumpet with Larry Wiseman and Allen Miller; piano with Dr. R. Kent Cook. Ms. Wahl is frequently an Adjunct Instructor at Marian College. In addition, she currently conducts and musical directs at Indianapolis Civic Theatre, where she is now in her eighth season.
